Baptisms at St Peter\u2019s Church<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

What is a baptism?\u00a0<\/strong>Baptism and christening are two words for the same thing: it is the\"\"<\/a> once in a lifetime event by which one is made a member of the Church of God.\u00a0 It marks the beginning of a journey of faith that lasts a whole lifetime.\u00a0 The Church of England explains more here.<\/a><\/p>\n

Is there an age limit?\u00a0 <\/strong>Anyone, child or adult, can be baptised.\u00a0 For children, the parents make that decision on their behalf, while adults choose this course for themselves.\u00a0 If baptism is chosen by an adult, it is often \u2013 but not always \u2013 after a period of preparation for confirmation and both the baptism and the confirmation are part of the same ceremony.<\/p>\n

Can I arrange a baptism at St Peter\u2019s South Weald?\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>Unless there are very special reasons, a child should be baptised in the parish church where the family lives.\u00a0 This is because becoming a member of a church family is an important part of beginning the Christian journey, so it is right that the person receiving baptism is\u00a0 able to grow in faith among his or her own church family.\u00a0 Obviously, if the child\u2019s parents already worship as part of the church family, even if they do not actually live in the parish, then we will be delighted to welcome the child too!<\/p>\n

When do baptisms happen?\u00a0 <\/strong>Baptisms at St Peter\u2019s Church take place in the main Sunday service at 9.30 a.m. with the whole congregation there to share in this great occasion.<\/p>\n

How much does a baptism cost?<\/strong>\u00a0There is no fee for baptism.<\/p>\n

What about Godparents?\u00a0 <\/strong>Traditionally, a child has three godparents; however, more or fewer are possible.\u00a0 Ask the vicar for guidance in this.\u00a0 The Church requires that all godparents are baptised, because their role is to support the child as they grow in faith.<\/p>\n
